Winter Essentials-The Trench Coat

The Trench Coat is a classic wardrobe piece investment that lasts for a longtime .It keeps you warm ,dry, stylish and is evergreen through all seasons. This week we feature the winter layering essential that has an extra bit of snug fused with some sass ,color and smiles ,making it the perfect gear to brave those chills!Ever wondered why wearing them gives you a whiff of authoritative feeling? The history of trench coats and the motive behind their design ,explains it all!

History

The Trench Coats were part of military warfare outfits that were practical enough in terms of length( hits till the knee) ,covered the body and provided mobility in muddy trails through the trenches. The iconic Khaki Color is said to have helped the officers blend in during the guerrilla warfare !The trench coats discovery is credited to both Aquascutum and Burberry in the 1850s. While the Aqua Scutum (Latin for Water Free/Repellent) coats were worn as Military Utilitarian uniform ,the Burberry Tielocken coat were inspired from the Hampshire Shepherds and were made of Gabardine(wool that keeps you warm yet repels water and keeps you dry). These later on went on to make way in the wardrobes of civilians in 1900s as a popular utilitarian layering option!

What to look for while buying a Trench Coat?

Keep in mind to find a coat that is firmly fitted (hugs you at right places) ,nips at the waist and hits just till the knee .Ensure that there is enough room for layers. It can be layered with t-shirts , blouses ,dress or sweater. Look for roomy side pockets that help you shield your hands as the weather gets severe. Having removable coat linings makes it a versatile and good option to last through multiple seasons and fluctuating climates. We say stock up on them during the sale periods when you can find some really cool ones at slashed prices!

Now that we know how to buy one, lets decide how to style them?

5 Ways to Style Your Trench Coat

Look1 –Coat and Denim Look

If you are planning to head out then make your winter travels,  fun and eye catching by pairing a Bright Red or Maroon color trench coat with Raglan White Tee or Plain White Tee and Blue denims .Add bright color lipstick that matches with the coat and a smile a little bright , won’t you?

Dissonance-Fall Love Story

This week join us as we take a walk on the mysterious side of Fall. From the runways to down the street, the theme that has got us surely intrigued and allured is Dark Romance .It brings in to picture, Richer, Deeper and more Decadent shades that weaves a feel of larger than life alluring love .The Neo Victorian Style inspired from this theme sets just the right amount of Goth that not only lets you take delight in your dark side but also is also practical and Glam.

Our outfit this week is themed on “Dissonance” that reflects Dark Romance infused with Bohemian Spirits. There is a new Blouse in town ,that shows a conflicting mind in Love – the Vent Style Long Tee that has a Front Slit which gives an  Androgynous look  and  is juxtaposed with Flowy Silhouette that has a very 70s vibe to it.

Embrace the Fierce Side Of Love this Fall, by pairing the Deep Burgundy Vent Tee with Black Leggings studded at bottom and a pair of Khaki Suede boots. Sport a Twisted Damp Hair bun or keep  those curls loose with Undone Waves because you never know who may be falling for those beautiful  imperfections !

fall look

We leave you with a poem that paints a beautiful melancholy of woman with elegance. Her intriguing beauty left the poet so mesmerized that he wrote a poem for her after seeing her at an event where she was dressed in beautiful Black Gown.

“She Walks In Beauty”

She walks in beauty, like the night

Of cloudless climes and starry skie
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meets in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which Heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress
Or softly lightens o’er her face,
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek and o’er that brow
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,–
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent

There’s room for anyone to step up in a startup so that’s what I tried to do. It was incremental, but it turned out that writing code wasn’t the best use of my time; it was hiring and managing. Ela Bhatt(Founder of First Trade Union for Self Employed Indian Women-SEWA)

bhattela-sewa“SEWA’s members have sufficient to eat. They are not starved any more. They have escaped to a large extent from the clutches of the moneylenders, the contractors, the middle men. And in the process, a woman’s own self esteem has grown. She knows “I can manage”, she knows that she is important, she knows her identity, that “I am a worker”. She has a name, an address, a bank account number, an insurance policy, a pension plan. She has learned who the exploiting forces are. She is more aware that poverty is not destiny: that she does not have to accept that as her destiny. You see that transformation all the time. But what makes me happiest is that they see that they are more self-reliant, and they are fiercely independent.”-Ela

The Trade Union born out of  Textile Labour Association is one of the major revolutionary moments in Indian textile  scenario that flourished under the gritty ,determined and able leadership of Ela Bhatt.A lawyer turned Gandhian revolutionary Ela Bhatt helped in assisting daughters of mill workers who had lost heir livelihoods when major mills shut in 1968 and went on to create sustainable living for these  self employed women fighting the society, the likes of middle men and contractors. She argued behind the thought of having a union not for fighting against any employer but to create a community for sake of uniting women workers  and providing a platform for them to become self reliant.
